Molly pt. 2; Christmas shopping and GRAB; Lab lunch and heading back to Waco

12/19

I had to make the scary journey to the Galleria to pick up a few Christmas-related items, and in doing so made the mistake of entering the Apple Store, which had been overtaken by iPod-crazy throngs. I didn't stay long; between the large numbers of people and horribly ignorant questions, there wasn't much for me there.

I wanted to catch up with Molly again before the holidays, so she picked me up Monday evening so that I could introduce her to the wonder of the Volcano. Molly's a bit of a gourmet (well, probably more than a bit; more than I, certainly), so I thought she would probably appreciate the wonder of the strawberry basil margarita. Drinks in hand, we got a table and got down to the business of conversation.

Our discussion confirmed what I have recently suspected: Molly is cooler than I am. She's more versed in music (the primary determinant), cool blogs (music and otherwise; she also reads both Gawker and Slashdot, putting her in the cool company of BCM Lauren), and food (probably a better cook, too); and has lived in both Boston and New Orleans, both of which trump Houston.

But that's OK. I like that, actually. We had a good time (at least, I did). She also confessed that she found my blog (you're a sneaky one), and had to confirm that the "girl drama" post wasn't about her (nope). Anyway, a couple of rounds of drinks under our respective belts and we returned to my place for a little Arrested Development.

12/20

I started my evening with a little more Christmas shopping. I had resolved that the time-honored gift of booze is always a thoughtful one, and went to Central Market to pick out a variet of beers for Cindy, and to pick up a bottle of something nice for Shawn, and the acoutrements with which to wrap them.

I got back and wrapped presents so that I'd be ready, as Cindy and I hadn't discussed when we were doing the exchange, but it turned out that she hadn't finished her shopping yet. Dan was doing another gig at GRAB, so we went there, enjoyed the music, drank some beer, and played some pool. Amazing how much more fun things are with good music around...

12/21

This was it, the night that broke the streak. I stayed in, did some packing, and it was glorious.

12/22

I went into work and ended up having a light day. We were interviewing a new postdoc (a refugee from Jeff's lab), and then went out for a nice lab lunch at Mai's, where I tried the vermicelli/barbecued pork/egg roll combination that Cindy had eaten previously, along with their always pleasant coconut drink. It was thoroughly enjoyable, though in the future it's going to be hard to pass up the pho.

Resolving that I would get nothing else done that afternoon, I took off early, ran some errands, went home, packed, and left for Waco...
